Cirrus Logic’s WM8960 is a low power, high quality stereo CODEC designed for portable digital audio applications. The stereo class D speaker drivers provide 1 W per channel into 8 ohm loads with a 5 V supply. Flexible speaker boost settings allow speaker output power to be maximized while minimizing other analog supply currents. External component requirements are drastically reduced as no separate microphone, speaker, or headphone amplifiers are required. Advanced on-chip digital signal processing performs automatic level control for the microphone or line input. Stereo 24-bit sigma-delta ADCs and DACs are used with low power over-sampling digital interpolation and decimation filters and a flexible digital audio interface. The WM8960 is supplied in a very small and thin 5 mm x 5 mm QFN package, ideal for use in hand held and portable systems.
Seeed’s ReSpeaker 2-mics Pi HAT is a dual-microphone expansion board for Raspberry Pi designed for AI and voice applications, and is based on this WM8960 low power stereo CODEC. This means that users can build more powerful and flexible voice products that integrate Amazon Alexa voice service, Google assistant, and so on. There are two microphones, one on each side of the board for collecting sounds, and the board also provides three APA102 RGB LEDs, one user button, and two on board grove connectors for expanding the board capabilities. Additionally, there is also a 3.5 mm audio jack, and JST PH 2-pin connector that are both available for audio output.
