They work - except that the grounding is horribly noisy. Used to power an arduino based wall switch for a home automation project. Using a standard wall switch, connected to the arduino through a pin set to INPUT-PULL-UP and the arduinos GND, when my hand was near the wire or touching the switch, the pin rapidly bounced between high and low. The capacitance of my hand near or on the wire was enough to destabilize the connection to ground. I had to tie the arduinos GND to my house’s ground to get it to remain stable. So yes, they DO convert 120vac to 5vdc, but with a very unstable/noisy ground line. Using ac/dc converters salvaged from phone charger plugs bought on amazon, I didn’t have this issue. (Standard 120v to 5vdc charger “blocks”)
